Micaya is a dance instructor, choreographer, artistic director, and producer extraordinaire.  She established the San Francisco International Hip Hop DanceFest in 1999 and her dance company SoulForce in 2001. Formally trained in many diverse dance forms, she incorporates a wide range of diversity in her choreography and teaching styles. Micaya’s classes are LOVED by many students of all ages and backgrounds due to her exceptional teaching skills and the non-intimidating atmosphere she creates In her classes. Dance Mission’s theater director, Stella Adelman, sits down with beloved Dance Mission teacher and producer, Micaya (“Best Dance Instructor” – SFBG) before a tech rehearsal for Mission in the Mix, her annual show, that premiered this past June. Together they talk about how Micaya started teaching at Dance Mission, creating Mission in the Mix, and producing the San Francisco International Hip Hop DanceFest during a time when the word “Hip Hop” was still surrounded by negative connotations and more.
